HANOI, July 14 - Vietnam's Asian Cup players are profiting from their
fine start to the tournament in the form of a tidy windfall from the
Vietnam Football Association (VFA).
The VFA will pay the national team 300 million Vietnamese dong ($18,700)
as a reward for the co-hosts' 1-1 draw against Qatar, the
English-language Vietnam News reported on Saturday.
Thursday's draw came after Vietnam had stunned United Arab Emirates 2-0
in their opening Group B game last weekend, earning them even more pocket
money with an unexpected win bonus.
The Vietnamese team, who are second in the group on goal difference
behind holders Japan, have so far picked up almost two billion dong
during the Asian Cup.
They face Japan in their final Group B game on Monday with a place in the
quarter-finals at stake.
Vietnam is still a relatively poor country with the average yearly income
around a little over $3,000 per person.
