China advanced to the men's team semifinals at the Asian table tennis
championships on Tuesday after knocking out Singapore 3-0.

World No. 1 Ma Lin made easy work of his game against 11th-ranked Gao
Ning of Singapore 11-5 in the first set.

But Gao recovered from a slow start to make the following two sets
hard-fought ones for Ma, who only won by a narrow margin 11-8 and 16-14.

Both the next two games proved lopsided affairs, with second-ranked Wang
Hao defeating Yang Zi 11-6, 11-4, 11-6 and eighth-ranked Chen Qi crushing
Cai Xiaoli 11-1, 11-2, 11-6.

Japan made the biggest upset of the day, dashing South Korea's hope of
staying in the championships with a straight sets success.

The battle between the two Northeast Asian countries lasted longer than
any other game in the day as the South Korean trio, led by Joo Se Hyuk,
the 2003 world runner-up, tried but failed to reverse the situation.

Hong Kong of China also booked a place in the semifinals with a 3-0
defeat of India, while Chinese Taipei dislodged Indonesia 3-0.
