Foreign auto giants eye on Chinese market

www.chinanews.cn 2007-04-28 09:17:35

Chinanews, Shanghai, Apr. 28 C The international auto show is going on
in full swing in Shanghai. The show clearly sends a message that as one
of the most promising auto markets in the world, China has attracted more
foreign auto giants to come to the country to make investment. And in
fact, foreign auto manufacturers do quicken their pace on their march
into the Chinese market.
In order to realize its production goal in China, Fiat is making big
investment in the Chinese market. The companys senior managers have
attached great importance to the Chinese market. According to Fiats CEO
Sergio Marchionne, the company's target for 2010 is producing 300,000
auto units a year in China. The companys manager in China also said
that Fiat aimed to take a share of the Chinese market with its new
products tailored to the needs of Chinese customers.
BMW president Norbert Reithofer came to Shanghai Auto Show this year to
unveil the company's new concept car CS. In an interview, Norbert
Reithofer said that although Japan was currently BMWs largest market in
Asia, the situation might change very soon. Sensing the importance of the
Chinese market, BMW has set up a joint venture with a Chinese local auto
company in Shenyang. The company has designed and produced the BMW 5 Long
Wheel Base specially for Chinese customers. Over the past five years,
BMWs car sale in China has increased by 750%, he said.
Rick Wagoner, CEO of the General Motors, said that for years GM had aimed
at becoming a good entrepreneur in China and they had made concerted
efforts to realize the goal. At present, the Shanghai Auto Industrial
Corporation has launched its national brand, and GM wants to act as their
business partner to help them make the grade, he said. He said that GM
would not focus on the short-term interest in China, instead it would
look at China as part of its long-term goal in the world.
Beijing Mercedes Benz Auto Company has launched its E-class sedan.
According to Dong Changzheng, the companys executive vice president for
brand promotion, the new car model is targeted at senior administrators
and business managers in China. The car has passed the environmental test
from the state and is now included on the government purchasing list.
Since the car was launched into the market last year, the German company
has made constant changes to meet the needs of the Chinese market, he
said.
