Foreign auto giants eye on Chinese market

www.chinanews.cn 2007-04-28 09:17:35

Chinanews, Shanghai, Apr. 28 C The international auto show is going on
in full swing in Shanghai. The show clearly sends a message that as one
of the most promising auto markets in the world, China has attracted more
foreign auto giants to come to the country to make investment. And in
fact, foreign auto manufacturers do quicken their pace on their march
into the Chinese market.
In order to realize its production goal in China, Fiat is making big
investment in the Chinese market. The companys senior managers have
attached great importance to the Chinese market. According to Fiats CEO
Sergio Marchionne, the company's target for 2010 is producing 300,000
auto units a year in China. The companys manager in China also said
that Fiat aimed to take a share of the Chinese market with its new
products tailored to the needs of Chinese customers.
BMW president Norbert Reithofer came to Shanghai Auto Show this year to
unveil the company's new concept car CS. In an interview, Norbert
Reithofer said that although Japan was currently BMWs largest market in
Asia, the situation might change very soon. Sensing the importance of the
Chinese market, BMW has set up a joint venture with a Chinese local auto
company in Shenyang. The company has designed and produced the BMW 5 Long
Wheel Base specially for Chinese customers. Over the past five years,
BMWs car sale in China has increased by 750%, he said.
Rick Wagoner, CEO of the General Motors, said that for years GM had aimed
at becoming a good entrepreneur in China and they had made concerted
efforts to realize the goal. At present, the Shanghai Auto Industrial
Corporation has launched its national brand, and GM wants to act as their
business partner to help them make the grade, he said. He said that GM
would not focus on the short-term interest in China, instead it would
look at China as part of its long-term goal in the world.
Beijing Mercedes Benz Auto Company has launched its E-class sedan.
According to Dong Changzheng, the companys executive vice president for
brand promotion, the new car model is targeted at senior administrators
and business managers in China. The car has passed the environmental test
from the state and is now included on the government purchasing list.
Since the car was launched into the market last year, the German company
has made constant changes to meet the needs of the Chinese market, he
said.

First media co. to adopt shareholding system

www.chinanews.cn 2005-04-19 15:05:11

Chinanews, Beijing, Apr.18 (Wang Yongzhi) - With registered capital of
100 million yuan, China Insurance Press Co., Ltd. was primarily initiated
by the China Reinsurance Group Corp. and jointly established by China
Life Insurance (Group) Company, Beijing Creative Media Investment (Group)
Company, Fuxi Investment (Holding) Corp. and PICC Holding Co., Ltd. On
Apr.18th, China Insurance Press Co., Ltd. held its opening ceremony,
becoming China's first news agency to adopt a shareholding system.
China Insurance News, which began issuance 11 years ago, has transformed

Based on ensuring state-owned share holdings and a belief that this is a
significant experiment in China's reform of industry news media and new
progress in news publication system reform, senior officials at the China
Insurance Regulatory Commission and the General Administration of Press
and Publication gave approval to China Insurance News' attempt to
introduce diversified investment and to absorb insurance industry
investment, and news publication industry and privately-owned capital.

Poverty alleviation banquet to be held again

www.chinanews.cn 2005-04-06 14:00:07

Chinanews, Apr. 6 - The "Poverty Alleviation Banquet," which was halted
at the end of last year, is expected to be held again. He Daofeng,
vice-chairman of the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA),
said that the activity was not cancelled last year. It was postponed
because it is a new form and some aspects had not been prepared
sufficiently.
Last December, CFPA planed to hold the "Spring of Poverty
Alleviation--China' Poverty Eradication Award Spring Festival Party." By
buying tickets, people throughout the country could attend the evening
banquet in the State Banquet Hall of the Great Hall of the People and
have dinner with state leaders. The highest priced ticket was set at
38,000 yuan. Proceeds from ticket sales would be used for poverty
alleviation. Later on, the host announced that the activity was to be
postponed.
It was reported that the CFPA released information about the dinner party
to the media without approval from relevant departments. Officials of the
CFPA expressed that they would regulate workflow in the future, and would
not publicize activities until approval has been granted.
He said that the CFPA would consult with the Department of Civil Affairs
and that its concrete name had not been settled yet.

3G license may be issued on Sep

www.chinanews.cn 2005-04-05 13:30:32

Chinanews, April 5 - Officials from the Ministry of Information Industry
(MII) revealed that China would release a definite plan on 3G license
issuance at the Global Summit-3G in China held this September. 3G cell
phones are expected to become commercialized by the end of this year.
The MII and the Japan FLY Company held a joint press conference in Tokyo
on Mar. 30th. Chen Yuping, director of the Exchange Center of the China
Academy of Telecommunications Research of the MII, indicated that China
might set a timetable for 3G license issuance at the September summit.
Chen also revealed that China was still testing its TD-SCDMA core
technology, and might finally establish the 3G business in late 2005.
Before this, insiders generally believed that 3G licenses would be issued
before this June or on May 17th, World Telecommunications Day. But Chen
Yuping rejected such predictions. "China will not manage
commercialization service before finishing its tests on TD-SCDMA
technology," he said.

NEET in China shirks independence

www.chinanews.cn 2005-04-01 17:06:15

China Newsweek , By Luo Xunhui and Sun Ran
People traditionally define adulthood as economic independence. Yet, a
new group of unemployed young adults labeled with the moniker NEET (Not
in Education, Employment or Training) has begun to grow in China. They
either voluntarily or involuntarily give up an independent lifestyle,
instead they depend on family members for financial support. Their total
lack of economic independence has placed them in an awkward social
position.
The annual sessions of the National People's Congress (NPC) and the
Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) concluded
recently in Beijing. In her proposal to the legislative body, Jiang
Zhonglian, a CPPCC representative, referred directly to China's NEETs,
asserting that the population of this new group has already exceeded that
of unemployed workers. Her proposal marks the first time influential
Chinese have expressed concern about this growing group.
NEET: Not in Education, Employment or Training
The term originated in the U.K. in the 1980s and referred to unemployed,
unmarried youth aged 15 and older who were not pursuing formal education
or professional training courses, but rather relied on their parents or
mates for support.
In China, NEETs can be placed into three major categories. This first
group is made up of parasites that detest hard work. The second group
includes those thrown into unemployment for a variety of reasons. For
instance, young adults with low levels of schooling unable to find work,
or those with higher levels of formal schooling unwilling to take jobs
that they view as beneath their qualifications. Lastly, an unconventional
group has given up work in order to pursue its dreams; some choose to
become full-time housewives or establish small private businesses.
There are no official statistics on the size of China's NEET population.
The group came to Jiang Zhonglian's attention because many friends and
relatives sought her help finding their children employment; most of
these jobless acquaintances were around 20 years old. At first, Ms. Jiang
was embarrassed by her inability to help. Then she discovered the
staggering size of this group. After investigation, she came to the
conclusion that their common characteristics are a lack of higher
education, special skills, and financial resources.
However, in recent years, the NEET demographic have been complicated by a
large influx of newly minted, unemployed college graduates. A segment of
these graduates have even obtained graduate degrees.
Gao Yan, a young woman from Xi'an, began applying for positions at big
firms such as the Bank of East Asia and Maersk Logistics soon after
finishing her master's degree in banking and finance. But, due to her
lack of work experience, these companies ended up rejecting her
application. She then sought out junior level positions only to be turned
down as "overqualified." Unemployed for a year, she was forced to turn to
her parents for financial support. Out of options, she then decided to
pursue her second master's degree in recreation and sports management at
a university in the United Kingdom. Gao Yan said she sweats at the
thought of the 500,000-yuan tuition fee raised by her working-class
parents.
Who should be blamed for those who do not want to grow up?
Li Tianguo, a doctor of sociology at the Institute of Labor Studies, says
that China's professional education is not in line with the labor market
and not oriented to employment. This has led to a harsh transitional
experience from school to employment, he said. Those without marketable,
professional skills are more likely to become a NEET.
On the other hand, this phenomenon may be a result of economic
development. Sun Yunxiao, a researcher at the China Youth and Children
Research Center, mentioned that in the past, undergraduates had to find
work as soon as they graduated because their families would no longer
have the means to support them. Nowadays, as some families have prospered
from the developing economy, many young graduates do not view employment
as such a pressing issue. Defining "work" from a modern point of view,
even a full-time housewife can be regarded as a type of laborer.
It is important to note that NEETs are all members of the one-child
generation. Many of these young men and women do not have a good sense of
what they want to do with their lives and are more apt to be frustrated
in work. Their parents are loath to let them have a rough time, and have
already offered them shelter. However, in coddling their children, they
provide shade from the sunshine of growth.
Regardless of the NEET subtype that they belong to, these young people
have grown up, but do not have a sound mentality. In Sun Yunxiao's
opinion, although they are born into rich families and their parents can
support them, they still lead a moribund life. Despite their lack of
employment, NEETs still form relationships and have children. Some fear
that this group will snowball, with more and more out of work youth
starting families. Other NEETs stand in a suspended childhood, afraid to
go out at night, afraid to meet strangers and even afraid to court at the
age of thirty.
Li Tianguo, a doctor of sociology at the Institute for Science of Labor,
says that work is an opportunity to integrate with society and NEETs harm
their own ability to establish a social personality. In foreign
countries, the idle, unmotivated NEET group tends towards drug use and
violent crimes; they are apt to become social outcasts and an instable
social factor. Furthermore, unemployment amongst young adults will likely
hurt China's fragile system of social security for the aged.
Bian Bingbin, CEO of Kerui Vocational Consultant Group, is actively
engaged in human resource management for foreign-funded enterprises. He
believes that competitiveness of the NEET demographic was not to be
compared with other job seekers. In terms of careers in technology,
companies would rather employ a new graduate over a NEET with a similar
educational background and experience because the professional knowledge
of the former is more up to date, while that of the NEET may have dropped
behind. Even in terms of manual labor, NEETs are often viewed as worn
out, their youth exhausted.
Bian postulated that members of the NEET group under 28 years old stay in
an unbalanced period in which their skills do not match job requirements
and demand for jobs exceeds supply. He said, "They need make arduous
efforts to find jobs. This is still the grim reality that all youth in
this age must confront."

China on track with exchange rate reform

www.chinanews.cn 2005-03-29 14:23:25

Chinanews, Mar. 29 - Zhou Xiaochuan, Governor of the People's Bank of
China, indicated a few days ago that the central bank would pay close
attention to China's economic and financial changes, and analyze
macroeconomic indices such as GDP and CPI in a timely manner, thereby
coming to a decision on interest rate change.
He also pointed out that, in its process of marketization, China's
economy would not experience the obvious economic cycles that other
mature market economies face. Countries with mature market economies need
to undergo a regular period of interest rate adjustment to relieve
monetary pressures. Interest rates can be increased or reduced, and as
china's economic cycles are not very stable, it is unreasonable predict
whether China's interest rates have entered a certain stage.
Zhou also said that RMB exchange rate policies would mainly consider
China's foreign economy and international financial balances, rather than
the favorable or unfavorable trade balance of other countries.
Zhou claimed that China would promote RMB exchange rate reform at a
prudent and stable pace, and would formulate such reforms at an
appropriate time.

marks were connected in a series with colorized powder, honoring the
12,500-kilometer long march. The activity helped teenagers understand

CEA to utilize new Airbus planes for Tibet route

www.chinanews.cn 2005-03-24 14:03:27

Chinanews, Beijing, Mar. 23, (By Zhou Yin) - China Eastern Airlines Co.
Ltd. (CEA) revealed today that it plans to open up a Shanghai-Lhasa route
this spring. Recently, it signed an agreement with Airbus Corp. to buy
five A319 passenger airplanes, valued at 200 million US dollars, far
below the catalog price. According to the agreement, these planes will be
consigned to CEA from February of 2006 to July of 2007.
CEA said it was a pity that it did not have flight routes to high
altitude regions. This type of plane, unique in its ability to reach high
altitudes and withstand high temperatures, will help the company open up
flight routes to areas such as Tibet.

Boom expected in direct US-China flights

www.chinanews.cn 2005-03-23 13:13:04

Chinanews, Beijing, Mar. 22 (By Zhou Yin) - After the execution of the
Sino-US Bilateral Agreement, the number of flights between China and the
United States and direct-flight cities will increase significantly.
The latest predictions of the Boeing Company indicate that the direct
flight market between the two countries will increase more than three
times in the next 20 years, with the number of direct-flight cities
reaching 53.
The company indicated that its 787 and 777s, which are not large-scale
planes, would serve this expanding market.
However, the Boeing Company stressed that the over 250-seat Boeing 787
was oil efficient and light, and that the 777 could fly 9,400 sea miles
carrying more than 300 passengers.
In addition, the Boeing Company also predicated that China would need to
purchase 2,300 new planes in the next 20 years, at a total cost of 183
billion US dollars. Meanwhile, the scale of China's plane fleet will
increase nearly four times, exceeding 2,800 planes and making China the
largest civil aviation market outside of the United States.

CNPC net profit reached 102.9 billion yuan last year

www.chinanews.cn 2005-03-18 13:17:03

Chinanews Mar.17 - Yesterday, China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC)
released its 2004 annual report, revealing that the company's net profit
totaled 102.9 billion yuan (US.4 billion), an increase of 47.9% from the
same period last year. According to yesterday's RMB foreign exchange
rate, CNPC has become the most profitable listed company in Hong Kong,
taking the place of HSBC Holdings, which posted an annual profit of 92.2
billion HK dollars in 2004.
CNPC announced that its sales volume in 2004 totaled 388.633 billion
yuan, up 27.9% over the previous year. Primary and diluted earnings per
share reached 0.59 yuan, up 0.19 yuan over 2003. CNPC's board of
directors suggested declaring a 0.147511 yuan final dividend in 2004. If
the medium-term declared dividend of 0.1159 yuan per share were included,
the declared dividend for 2004 would be 0.26 yuan per share.
CNPC indicated that if petroleum prices remain high, this year's profit
would exceed 100 billion yuan. As for its plan for A shares, CNPC said
that it has been working on the issue, but still has no specific plan.

China to step up anti-poverty drive

www.chinanews.cn 2005-03-12 14:55:36

(Source: CCTV.com)

BEIJING, Mar. 12 - Poverty experts from China's non-communist parties
have been sharing with the country's top advisory body the results of a
relief project in the southwest of the country. The pilot program began
in 1998 in Bijie, a poor farming region in Guizhou Province.
It's the 17th year that China's 8 non-communist parties have been engaged
in the Bijie Poverty-Relief project. Every year, a consulting team
comprising up to 20 experts from these parties volunteer to help
implement plans for Bijie's development.
Their major tasks are to alleviate poverty, improve the ecological
environment, and control population growth.
By taking advantage of their talent and information resources, as well as
their wide network in diversified sectors, the non-communist parties have
contributed to local development by introducing investment, training
local staff, and building schools.
Chang Jingshi, CPPCC member, said, "The consulting group uses its
networks and resources rather than money to implement the poverty-relief
project. It's a good form of efficiency, using little money, and doing a
lot of business."
Some other experts said that focussing on local resources is the key to
help the people become better-off. Improving efficiencies in coal mining
and water conservation, as well as introducing new crops for
non-traditional markets, for example, growing flowers.
An NPC deputy from Bijie said the pilot poverty-relief project is a good
trial to build social harmony. Gu Jiu, NPC deputy, said, "The help from
the non-communist parties is a way to incorporate multi-party cooperation
into our socialist construction. Or in other words, it's a way to
incorporate political harmony with economic harmony."
The government has been adopting more and more concrete measures to
alleviate poverty. In a major policy announcement of his government work
report, Premier Wen Jiabao, pledged that students from poor farming
families will enjoy free education. And the elimination of poverty has
been listed in the government's scheme to build a harmonious society.

Sino-Australian cooperation on energy resources in full swing

www.chinanews.cn 2005-02-18 12:57:56

Chinanews, Sydney, Feb. 17 (By LIU Yusheng) - Mr. Zhou Xiaoming, Consular
officer of the Economic and Commercial Affairs section at the Chinese
Consulate in Sydney, told the reporter today that Sino-Australian
cooperation on energy resources was in full swing, and changes that were
currently taking place in the form of cooperation between the two
countries were substantial and had long-term significance, including the
following:
(1) Long-term contracts are gradually replacing cash-for-goods trades to
become the main trading method. According to preliminary figures, China
and Australia have signed long-term supply contracts for over 1 billion
tons of iron ore and a considerable amount of nickel and copper ore
concentrate in 2004.
(2) Simple trading is gradually being supplanted by mutual shareholding
and joint exploitation. In 2004, China invested heavily in the mining
sector in Australia, including iron ore and nickel mines.
(3) Areas of mutual cooperation are expanding from mining (mainly iron
ore and alumina) to energy resources such as liquefied natural gas (LNG)
and coal. Following the first LNG contract that was worth 25 billion
Australian dollars, China and Australia have entered into fruitful
negotiations over their cooperation in the Gorgon LNG Project last year.
China's investment in the Australian coalmine industry is on the rise.
Zhou said that following the opening up of China's mining industry, there
has been raging interest to make a gold rush to the north within the
Australian mining industry. Several companies, including Sino Gold, are
accelerating their investments in China. According to Australian industry
experts, the world's greatest resource discoveries could take place in
China in the future.
Zhou further said that Sino-Australia economic and trade cooperation was
becoming more diversified in the form of cooperation, while the content
of this cooperation has been continuously reinforced and making
breakthroughs. Thus, the economic and trade cooperation between the two
countries has been taking huge strides forward in the direction of
comprehensive and multi-faceted development.

China's retail sales to exceed 6 trillion yuan

www.chinanews.cn 2005-02-01 15:34:32

Zhai Zhihong, director of the Department of Trade and External Economic
Relations Statistics under the National Bureau of Statistics, announced
yesterday in an interview that China's retail sales of general consumer
goods was expected to exceed six trillion yuan (725.5 billion US dollars)
in 2005, a year-on-year increase of about 13%. And it was a conservative
estimate. Given the fact that investment will be restrained and imports

China to set up Confucius Institutes in U.S.

www.chinanews.cn 2005-01-27 11:24:13

Chinanews, Jan. 27 - Chinese language education is currently experiencing
a boom in the United States, with insufficient teachers to meet the
growing demand. In order to further promote and popularize Chinese
language education and to boost the internationalization of the Chinese
language, the China National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign
Language plans to establish a number of Confucius Institutes in the
United States over the next two years, which will be responsible for
training programs for teachers as well as other Chinese language teaching
and learning activities.
Sources from the New York Service Center for Chinese Study Fellows said
that three models could be adopted to set up Confucius Institutes in the
United States: direct investment by the head office, cooperation with
American institutions, and franchising to other institutions. The Chinese
side will provide a standard school emblem and establish a uniform
teaching model. Meanwhile, it will also provide a certain number of
teachers and books.
With the rapid development of China's economy and the increasingly
extensive communication between China and the United States, more and
more Americans are studying Chinese. Chinese has become the seventh most
popular foreign language, after Spanish, French, German, Italian, etc.
The United States University Council has decided to set up an AP
(Advanced Placement) test on Chinese subject for high schools all over
the country.

China's private airlines ready for take-off

www.chinanews.cn 2005-01-21 13:36:05

Chinanews, Jan. 20 - The Licensing Regulations for Public Air
Transportation Enterprises officially took effect on January 15. All
private enterprises that comply with its requirements will be allowed to
operate private airlines in China. It is reported that currently almost
ten private enterprises have already filed applications under this new
regulation.
In 2004, the General Administration of Civil Aviation of China (CAAC)
approved five private airlines to be set up. One of these airlines, with
a registered capital of 300 million yuan (36.7 million US dollars), has
already rented a few 737-900 passenger aircrafts, headhunted more than
ten pilots and some top managers away from Hainan Airlines, and hired
over ten foreign pilots. It plans to be the first to commence commercial
operations during the Spring Festival period which starts on February 9.
The new rules relax the requirements for access to the civil aviation
industry. The requirements for state-owned entities to invest in
establishing public air transport enterprises are now also applicable to
private entities. However, as it is a capital-intensive industry, it is
not easy to set up an airline. The huge initial investment presents a
relatively high entry barrier, and causes many enterprises that are
thinking of entering the industry to have second thoughts.
It is difficult for private airlines to beat the existing state-owned
civil air industry in terms of the scale of operations, airline networks
and extra services. In order to attract passengers, it would be essential
for these airlines to use cheap tickets as their selling point. Several
private airlines have introduced the idea of "budget airlines" one after
another, indicating that they will compete with other airlines by means
of low cost and low ticket prices.

(January 18, 2005) A shop in Anhui's Huaibei City puts out various gold
roosters on its jewelry shelves. As the Year of Rooster is getting
closer, rooster-shaped ornaments and jewelry have become more popular on
the market, especially well-designed and well-meant "gold rooster" pieces.
