Low-cost airlines to take off in China
www.chinanews.cn 2005-03-10 12:49:03
Chinanews, Mar. 9 - The battle for passengers has been joined amongst
Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific Airways, China's Xiamen Airlines, Thai Airways
and newcomer AirAsia.
The direct flight from China's Xiamen to Thailand's Bangkok now only
costs 299 yuan (US)! This is the rumored airfare of the maiden flight
between Xiamen and Bangkok to be launched officially in April by
Thailand's AirAsia, the potentially earth-shaking low-cost airline in
Asia.
According to Xiamen's Administration of Aviation under the Civil Aviation
Administration of China (CAAC), AirAsia, jointly operated by
Malaysia-based AirAsia Co.,Ltd and Thai Shin Group, will make its maiden
flight between Xiamen and Bangkok on April 1st, using a Boeing 737-300
and operating only one flight a day. This will mean a small but important
step for budget airlines to set foot on the Chinese mainland. Similar
flights to Chengdu and Kunming are also on the way.
