Materazzi to sue papers over Zidane insult reports - BBC

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-07-06 08:55

ROME, July 5 - Italy defender Marco Materazzi is taking legal action
against three British newspapers over their reporting of the incident in
last July's World Cup final when he clashed with Zinedine Zidane, the BBC
reported on Thursday.

Zidane responded to verbal provocation by Materazzi by headbutting him to
the ground, earning a red card in his last game before retiring from
football.

Materazzi has decided to seek damages against the Sun, the Daily Mail and
the Daily Star over claims about what he said to the Frenchman, said the
Italian's lawyer Steven Heffer.

"He is taking legal action to clear his name," Heffer was quoted as
saying on the BBC's website (www.bbc.co.uk).

Materazzi received a two-match ban from FIFA over the incident. Zidane
has never revealed exactly what he said to him, only that the insult
related to his mother and sister.

Chinese Mandarin - Japan minister apologises for atomic-bomb remarks

WORLD / Asia-Pacific

Japan minister apologises for atomic-bomb remarks

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-07-01 15:53

TOKYO - Japan's defence minister apologised on Sunday for comments about
the 1945 U.S. atomic bomb attacks on the country which outraged survivors
and drew criticism from the ruling bloc ahead of a key election in late
July.

Japan's Defense Minister Fumio Kyuma speaks during a plenary session at
the IISS Asia Security Summit in this June 2, 2007 file photo, in
Singapore. Kyuma said the dropping of atomic bombs on Japan by the United
States during World War II was an inevitable way to end the war, a news
report said Saturday, June 30, 2007. 'I understand that the bombing ended
the war, and I think that it couldn't be helped,' Kyodo News agency
quoted Kyuma as saying in a speech at a university in Chiba, just east of
Tokyo.[Reuters]

Defence Minister Fumio Kyuma said he had not meant to offend the victims
when he said on Saturday the bombings "couldn't be helped" because they
had brought World War Two to an end and had prevented the Soviet Union
from entering the war against Japan.

"If my remarks were seen as lacking regard for the feelings of atomic
bomb victims, then I am sorry," he told a news conference.

On Saturday, Kyuma had said in a speech: "My understanding is that it
ended the war and that it couldn't be helped ... I don't hold a grudge
against the United States."

The remarks drew condemnation from victims of the August 6. 1945 bombing
of Hiroshima and the August 9 attack on Nagasaki, which together killed
more than 210,000 people by the end of the year. Some opposition parties
demanded Kyuma's resignation.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe defended his minister on Saturday, but ruling
party executives urged Kyuma to apologise, in a bid to minimise the
damage ahead of the July 29 upper house election.

"If the comments were misunderstood, then he should explain and
apologise," Shoichi Nakagawa, policy chief of the ruling Liberal
Democratic Party, said earlier on Sunday.

Abe has seen his support ratings drop to around 30 percent recently
largely due to voter anger over the government's mishandling of pension
records.

Officials in Japan -- the only nation to suffer an atomic bombing --
typically express sympathy for the victims, but most avoid criticising
the attacks out of consideration for Tokyo's ties with Washington, its
closest ally.

Defenders of the bombings say they convinced Japan to surrender and saved
lives that would otherwise have been lost had fighting continued. Critics
say the United States used the bombs to bolster its post-war position
against the Soviet Union.

Oden, Durant added to U.S. team; LeBron's status not set

Updated: 2007-06-28 14:25

Greg Oden and Kevin Durant are headed to USA Basketball camp. LeBron
James' summer plans still seem up in the air.

The United States added eight players to its roster Wednesday,
highlighted by the college stars who figure to be the top two picks in
the NBA draft.

"To show that they already have this commitment to playing for the United
States at this age is terrific," U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski said during a
conference call. "Hopefully they'll play many, many years for the United
States."

Jason Kidd, Carlos Boozer, Deron Williams, Mike Miller, Tayshaun Prince
and Tyson Chandler also were invited to Las Vegas for training camp in
July, a month before the Americans will try to qualify for the 2008
Olympics.

James, one of the team's captains, has called himself only "50-50" to
join his teammates in the tournament because his girlfriend is expecting
a baby next month and he wants to rest.

"I've been pretty clear on the fact that the commitments have worked both
ways. These three-year commitments, we expect people to honor those," USA
Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo said. "But we have things
that come up in life, let's be realistic about that. Injuries, family
situations, and so I want to take each case individually."

Colangelo also said Phoenix star Amare Stoudemire called Krzyzewski on
Tuesday to confirm his participation. Stoudemire, who had two knee
surgeries last year, seemed hesitant to play after the Suns' season ended.

The Americans will gather for training camp from July 20-22, with a
blue-white game on the last day. The roster will be trimmed before the
team returns to camp in August.

Besides the players added Wednesday, the Americans are also getting back
Kobe Bryant, Chauncey Billups and Michael Redd, who couldn't play last
summer. The final 12-man roster for the FIBA Americas tournament must be
submitted the day before the August 22 start.

Chinese basketball star Yao Ming was named No. 1 on the list of NBA's top
10 centers, according to a report in Dime magazine, issued on June 18.

The magazine describes Yao Ming thus:

"Instead of dominating for a few minutes here and there, Yao took over
entire games this year, averaging 25 points, 9.4 boards and 2 blocks a
night and entering the MVP discussion before a leg injury limited him to
just 48 games. Yao's conditioning has improved since he first came into
the League, allowing him to stay on the court and avoid senseless fouls.
Houston is still T-Mac's team, but no way can they even challenge Utah in
seven games without the best center in the League."

Names on the top 10 list following Yao Ming include Amare Stoudemire
(Phoenix Suns), Shaquille O'Neal (Miami Heat), Dwight Howard (Orlando
Magic) and Marcus Camby (Denver Nuggets).

Dime Magazine is an American basketball magazine that has been in
circulation since 2002.

Official: North Korea funds transferred

(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-14 21:56

HONG KONG - Most of the North Korean funds long frozen in a Macau bank
have been transferred, an official said on Thursday, raising the prospect
of an end to the deadlock stalling a nuclear disarmament deal with
Pyongyang.

Logo of Banco Delta Asia is displayed at its headquarters in Macau. The
United States expects resolution "very soon" of a longstanding banking
dispute with North Korea, paving the way for Pyongyang to begin
dismantling its nuclear arsenal, the top US nuclear negotiator said
Wednesday.[AFP]

"Francis Tam confirmed that Banco Delta Asia has remitted a sum of over
US$20 million out of Macau," a Macau government spokesman said, referring
to the territory's secretary for economy and finance.

North Korea has refused to honour a February agreement to begin shutting
its Yongbyon nuclear reactor and source of material for atomic weapons
until $25 million at Macau's Banco Delta Asia are released through normal
banking channels.

The funds were blocked after the United States blacklisted Banco Delta
Asia, accusing it of laundering illicit funds for Pyongyang.

Banks had balked at acting as a conduit for the money to be returned to
North Korea because of the stigma attached to holding Pyongyang's assets.

Japan's Kyodo news agency, citing Macau financial authorities, said the
funds were expected to be transferred through the New York branch of the
Federal Reserve and Russia's central bank to a Russian bank where North
Korea holds accounts.

Russia said on Wednesday it would allow one of its banks to transfer the
$25 million stuck in Banco Delta Asia, provided Washington gave written
guarantees that it would not fall foul of US sanctions against North
Korea.

The unblocking of the money would in effect allow the state -- which
conducted its first nuclear test last year -- back into the international
banking system from which it is currently ostracised.

More Talks?

The Macau government spokesman said the remittance was done "in
accordance to the instruction of a client" from North Korea.

As to where the sum went, the bank has declined to comment, citing
privacy concerns, he added.

China, which chairs the six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear
programme at which the February deal was reached, said earlier on
Thursday that member countries were working on the funds transfer.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang added at a news conference that
Beijing was willing to resume the six-country talks once all parties --
the two Koreas, the United States, China, Russia and Japan -- were in
agreement to do so.

Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill, the top US negotiator with
North Korea, is likely to visit China, Japan and South Korea next week
after attending a conference in Mongolia this weekend.

Under the February agreement struck by the six parties, North Korea is
slated to get 50,000 tonnes of heavy fuel oil, or its equivalent, once it
completes initial steps, including shutting down Yongbyon.

During the next phase of the pact, which includes making a complete
declaration of all its nuclear programmes and disabling all its nuclear
facilities, North Korea will get economic, energy and humanitarian aid up
to the equivalent of a further 950,000 tonnes of heavy fuel oil.

Chinese language - G8 reaches deal on 'substantial' emission cuts

WORLD / Europe

G8 reaches deal on 'substantial' emission cuts

(China Daily)
Updated: 2007-06-08 06:47

HEILIGENDAMM, Germany: Leaders of eight industrliazed nations meeting in
Germany have agreed to pursue "substantial" cuts in greenhouse gases,
Chancellor Angela Merkel said yesterday.

Group of Eight (G8) powers failed to overcome US resistance to committing
to specific numerical targets to curb global warming but did refer to the
goal of some countries of cutting emissions by 50 percent by 2050.

"In terms of targets, we agreed on clear language ... that recognizes
that (rises in) CO2 emissions must first be stopped and then followed by
substantial reductions," Merkel told reporters at the G8 summit in the
Baltic coast resort of Heiligendamm.

She hailed the decision as a "huge success," adding that it came after
many rounds of talks and negotiations.

The summit text confirmed that the eight nations would act to stem the
rise in global warming gases, followed by "substantial" reductions, the
most serious commitment to action on the issue by the United States, the
world's largest global warmer.

Washington had resisted attempts by Merkel to set a firm goal for cuts
needed to combat a warming of the earth's surface that scientists say
risks swelling sea levels and causing more droughts and floods.

But she secured a partial victory by securing an inclusion of the target
in the text.

The European Union believes 50 percent cuts are needed to ensure that
global temperatures do not rise more than 2 C above pre-industrial
levels, a threshold it says will trigger "dangerous" changes in the
climate system.

Merkel is hosting three days of talks at a Baltic coast resort with
counterparts from Britain, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, Russia and the
United States.

-Brazil's President Lula da Silva

Environmentalists condemned the G8's failure to agree on specific,
binding goals.

"Agreeing on a numerical target is a significant first step, and not
taking that first step is going to condemn us to a lot of pain and
suffering in terms of the impact of climate change," said Neil Adger of
Britain's Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research.

G8 leaders are tackling other threats to global stability, including
increased tension between the United States and Russia which some have
said heralded the start of a new Cold War.

US President George W. Bush sought to calm tensions with Moscow ahead of
a highly anticipated face-to-face meeting with Russia's Vladimir Putin at
the summit.

"I repeat Russia's not a threat, they're not a military threat, they're
not something that we ought to be hyperventilating about," Bush said.
"What we ought to be doing is figuring out ways to work together."

At a morning session focused on economic issues, Merkel sat between Bush
and Putin, who have exchanged public barbs on US missile shield plans in
the run-up to the summit.

The two presidents, smiling and looking relaxed, have not met
face-to-face since before Putin launched a verbal attack on the Bush
administration in February, accusing it of trying to force its will on
the world and become its "single master".

Bush said he would reiterate to Putin his proposal to have Russia send
generals and scientists to the United States to reassure them on his
plans to put a radar system in the Czech Republic and interceptor
missiles in Poland.

Al-Qaida: Captured US troops killed

Al-Qaida linked insurgents killed three American soldiers after capturing
them last month in Iraq, according to a militant video released Monday
that claimed to show footage of the ambush. The video offered no proof
for its claims.

This is an image made from video obtained by the Washington-based SITE
Institute showing the identification cards of Pvt. Byron W. Fouty, 19, of
Waterford Township, Mich. and Spc. Alex R. Jimenez, 25, of Lawrence,
Mass. According to the militant video released Monday, June 4, 2007,
Al-Qaida-linked insurgents killed three American soldiers after capturing
them last month in Iraq. [AP]

The clip, which was made available to The Associated Press by the
Washington-based SITE Institute, showed confused and jerky night battle
scenes, and later offered close-ups of two identification cards. It did
not show the soldiers.

"The Americans sent 4,000 soldiers looking for them," said an
unidentified voice on the video, which featured the logo of the media
production house of the Islamic State of Iraq. "They were alive and then
dead."

The body of one of the soldiers was found in Iraq's Euphrates River, but
the other two remain missing. Family friends of the missing men said the
US military briefed relatives about the video over the weekend.

The video offered no proof for its claims that the soldiers had been
killed and buried. The voiceover blamed their deaths on "the American
Army and their leaders, who do not care for the feelings of the soldiers'
mothers."

"And as you refused to deliver the bodies of our killed people, we will
not deliver the bodies of your dead, and their end will be beneath the
ground, Allah willing," the voice said.

A body found May 23 in the Euphrates River was identified by the US
military as Pfc. Joseph Anzack Jr., 20, of Torrance, Calif. The missing
soldiers have been identified as Spc. Alex R. Jimenez, 25, of Lawrence,
Mass., and of Pvt. Byron W. Fouty, 19, of Waterford, Mich.

The three vanished after their combat team was ambushed May 12 about 20
miles outside Baghdad. Five others, including an Iraqi, were killed in
the ambush, subsequently claimed by al-Qaida.

The attack triggered a massive search in the area south of Baghdad known
as the "triangle of death" for the rampant insurgent activity there.

Gordon Dibler, Fouty's stepfather, said he was holding out hope for the
soldiers' safe return: "We're praying, and so far, we don't know for
certain that they aren't alive."

At the end of the 10-minute 41-second video, the identification cards of
the two missing soldiers were shown, with the headline: "Bush is the
reason of the loss of your POWs" written on the screen above the cards.
SITE, an organization that monitors terrorist groups, did not say how it
obtained the video. A card belonging to Anzack was not shown.

Along with the identification cards, the footage also showed credit
cards, American and Iraqi money and other personal items that the
militants called "booty."

There was no immediate word from US officials about the Islamic State of
Iraq claim.

The video also showed footage, apparently taken before the ambush, of
three masked men standing around a stand displaying a sketch of the area,
mapping out the attack plan. One of the three men, who were all dressed
in black, talked to the camera and pointed to the sketch. Another stood
by him carrying a gun.

"I have urged you to bring me American prisoners," said the man, whose
name was not given but was identified as one of the militant group's
leaders.

A Islamic Web site that commonly posts videos from militant groups
including the Islamic State of Iraq said in a banner headline that it
would show the video within hours, but the video has not yet appeared.

After the soldiers disappeared, the Islamic State of Iraq issued Web
statements warning the Americans to call off the hunt "if you want their
safety."

Chinese Class - US, Iran end 27-year diplomatic freeze

WORLD / America

US, Iran end 27-year diplomatic freeze

(AP)
Updated: 2007-05-29 06:34

BAGHDAD - The United States and Iran broke a 27-year diplomatic freeze
Monday with a four-hour meeting about Iraqi security. The American envoy
said there was broad policy agreement, but that Iran must stop arming and
financing militants who are attacking U.S. and Iraqi forces.

Iranian Ambassador Hassan Kazemi Qomi told The Associated Press that the
two sides would meet again in less than a month. U.S. Ambassador Ryan
Crocker said Washington would decide only after the Iraqi government
issued an invitation.

"We don't have a formal invitation to respond to just yet, so it doesn't
make sense to respond to what we don't have," Crocker told reporters
after the meeting.

The talks in the Green Zone offices of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri
al-Maliki were the first formal and scheduled meeting between Iranian and
American government officials since the United States broke diplomatic
relations with Tehran after the 1979 Islamic Revolution and the seizure
of the U.S. Embassy.

An AP reporter who witnessed the opening of the session said Crocker and
Kazemi shook hands.

The American envoy called the meeting "businesslike" and said at "the
level of policy and principle, the Iranian position as articulated by the
Iranian ambassador was very close to our own."

However, he said: "What we would obviously like to see, and the Iraqis
would clearly like to see, is an action by Iran on the ground to bring
what it's actually doing in line with its stated policy."

Speaking later at a news conference in the Iranian Embassy, Kazemi said:
"We don't take the American accusations seriously."

Crocker declined to detail what Kazemi had said in the session, but the
Iranian diplomat formerly a top official in the elite Revolutionary
Guards Quds Force said he had offered to train and equip the Iraqi
army and police to create "a new military and security structure" for
Iraq.

Kazemi said U.S. efforts to rebuild those forces were inadequate to
handle the chaos in Iraq, for which he said Washington bore sole
responsibility. He said he also offered to provide what assistance Iran
could in rebuilding Iraq's infrastructure, which he said had been
"demolished by the American invaders."

The icebreaking session, according to both sides, did not veer into other
difficult issues that encumber the U.S.-Iranian relationship primarily
Iran's nuclear program and the more than a quarter-century history of
diplomatic estrangement.

For its part, Iran's Shiite theocracy fears the Bush administration
harbors plans for regime change in Tehran and could act on those desires
as it did against Saddam Hussein in Iraq.

Washington and its Sunni Arab allies are deeply unnerved by growing
Iranian influence in the Middle East and the spread of increasingly
radical Islam.

Compounding all that is Iran's open hostility to Israel.

But the issues at hand in these first formal contacts portend a bruising
set of talks all other issues aside should the two sides have
follow-up meetings.

The Americans insist that Iran, specifically its Quds force, has been
bankrolling, arming and training Iraqi militants, particularly the Mahdi
Army militia of radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

Those men, who are deeply embedded in the Iraqi armed forces and police,
are believed to make up the Shiite death squads that have pushed Baghdad
into the violence and chaos that prompted the U.S.-Iraqi security
crackdown, now in its fourth month.

Beyond that, Iran is charged with sending into Iraq the deadly
explosively formed penetrators, or EFPs, the armor piercing roadside
bombs that have killed hundreds of U.S. soldiers. Mahdi Army commanders
have told AP that they receive those weapons from the Revolutionary
Guards and that many of the militia's foot soldiers have gone to Iran for
training with the elite military force.

Kazemi and Crocker said the Iranians did not raise the subject of seven
Iranians that were captured by the United States in Iraq. Five are still
in U.S. custody.

"The focus of our discussions were Iraq and Iraq only," Crocker said.

Just before 10:30 a.m., al-Maliki greeted the two ambassadors and led
them into a conference room, where they sat across a long, glistening
wood table from each other. Al-Maliki then made a brief statement before
leaving.

He told both sides that Iraqis wanted a stable country free of foreign
forces and regional interference. Iraq should not be turned into a base
for terrorist groups, he said, adding that the U.S.-led forces in Iraq
were only here to help rebuild the army, police and infrastructure.

The United States had no plans to launch a strike against Iran from Iraq,
he said.

"We are sure that securing progress in this meeting would, without doubt,
enhance the bridges of trust between the two countries and create a
positive atmosphere" that would help them deal with other issues, he said.

After he left, the meeting moved to a second room where the delegations
sat at three long tables draped in white cloth and put together in a
triangular formation. National Security Adviser Mowaffak al-Rubaie took
charge of the Iraqi delegation.

In Tehran, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said the talks
could lead to future meetings, but only if Washington admitted that its
Middle East policy had failed.

"We are hopeful that Washington's realistic approach to the current
issues of Iraq by confessing its failed policy in Iraq and the region
and by showing a determination to changing the policy guarantees
success of the talks and possible further talks," Mottaki said.

Crocker said he could not speculate whether future talks even if they
happened would be raised to a higher-level, perhaps that of Secretary
of State Condoleezza Rice and Mottaki.

One reporter asked Crocker if he had a meal with Kazemi during a break in
the talks that ran over the lunch hour.

No, the veteran American Mideast hand said, a wry tone in his voice. "We
drank tea together."

Chinese School - Iraq makes plans for quick US pullout

WORLD / Middle East

Iraq makes plans for quick US pullout

(AP)
Updated: 2007-05-22 05:45

BAGHDAD - Iraq's military is drawing up plans to cope with any quick U.S.
military pullout, the defense minister said Monday, as a senior American
official warned that the Bush administration may reconsider its support
if Iraqi leaders don't make major reforms by fall.

The U.S. official did not say what actions could be taken by the White
House, but his comments reflected the administration's need to show
results in Iraq as an answer to pressure by the Democrats in Congress
seeking to set timetables on the U.S. military presence.

Several mortar shells hit the U.S.-controlled Green Zone, one striking
the Iraqi parliament building but causing no casualties the latest in
near daily barrages on the nerve center of the U.S. mission and Iraqi
government that underline the country's tenuous security.

At least 58 Iraqis were killed by attacks or found dead across Iraq,
including seven people ambushed on a bus northeast of Baghdad, police
said. The dead included 24 men whose bullet-riddled bodies were found
across Baghdad, apparent victims of sectarian death squads.

British troops clashed with Shiite Muslim gunmen in the southern city of
Basra. Britain's military said one British soldier and a civilian driver
were killed when a supply convoy was attacked in the center of the city,
Iraq's second biggest.

Elsewhere, U.S. troops raided safe houses south of Baghdad but failed to
find three soldiers missing since a May 12 ambush that left four other
Americans and an Iraqi dead.

"We've (identified) some safe houses and we targeted a couple of those
today and they were able to slip away from us. But we're going to come at
things from a different angle," a U.S. spokesman, Maj. Webster Wright,
said without elaborating.

U.S. officers said the search by thousands of U.S. and Iraqi soldiers may
be forcing the kidnappers to move the three Americans frequently,
preventing insurgents from posting pictures of their captives on the
Internet.

"We choose to be cautiously optimistic," Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch told CNN.
"We're pursuing all leads with a passion, but right now we believe our
soldiers are still alive. Each day that passes when we don't see proof of
life, it causes us concern."

With violence raging, pressure is mounting on Prime Minister Nouri
al-Maliki's government to demonstrate progress on key reforms or risk
losing American support for the unpopular war.

On Monday, Defense Minister Abdul-Qader al-Obeidi told reporters Iraq's
military was drawing up plans in case U.S.-led forces left the country
quickly.

"The army plans on the basis of a worst case scenario so as not to allow
any security vacuum," al-Obeidi said. "There are meetings with political
leaders on how we can deal with a sudden pullout."

It was unclear whether al-Obeidi's comment referred to routine
contingency planning or reflected a feeling among Iraqi leaders that the
days of U.S. support may be numbered even though President Bush blocked
an effort by Congress to set a withdrawal timetable.

A White House spokesman, Tony Fratto, said President Bush expressed
confidence in al-Maliki during a telephone call Monday to the Iraqi
leader.

He said the two talked about political progress in Iraq, and al-Maliki
gave Bush updates on two key U.S. demands legislation to share Iraq's
oil wealth among its regions and ethnic groups and a reform of the
constitution.

But two senior Iraqi officials told The Associated Press that Bush warned
al-Maliki that Washington expected to see "tangible results quickly" on
the oil bill and other legislation as the price for continued support.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't
supposed to release the information.

In London, a senior U.S. official echoed that warning, saying the Bush
administration wanted signs of progress by fall or it would be forced to
reconsider its policy in Iraq.

The official, who briefed reporters on condition his name not be
published, said the top American diplomat and military commander in Iraq
would submit a report on Iraqi progress in September.

"If one looks at when critical progress is to be made, one would be best
advised to look at this fall as a key point," the official said.

Senior Kurdish lawmaker Mahmoud Othman confirmed that U.S. pressure was
mounting, especially on the oil bill, which was endorsed by the Iraqi
Cabinet three months ago but has yet to come to the floor of parliament.

"The Americans are pressuring us to accept the oil law. Their pressure is
very strong. They want to show Congress that they have done something so
they want the law to be adopted this month. This interference is negative
and will have consequences," Othman told AP.

Kurdish legislators oppose the formula for distributing oil revenues
among the Iraqi communities, arguing for a greater say in how the money
is disbursed.

Major Shiite and Kurdish parties oppose several proposed changes in the
constitution, as well as Sunni Arab demands for a loosening of rules
banning former Saddam Hussein supporters from government jobs.

Prospects for far-reaching agreements among Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds
were thrown into doubt over the weekend when the leader of the largest
Shiite party, Abdul-Aziz al-Hakim, was diagnosed with lung cancer at a
hospital in Houston.

Al-Hakim, who left the U.S. for treatment in Iran, delivered a televised
address Monday in which he said he was suffering from a "limited tumor"
but expected to return to the country soon.

U.S. officials had been counting on al-Hakim to help push through
reforms, and a lengthy absence could make it difficult to deliver Shiite
support.

In other violence, the Iraqi newspaper Azzaman reported Monday that one
of its reporters, Ali Khalil, 22, was kidnapped while leaving a
relative's house in the increasingly volatile Baiyaa neighborhood of
Baghdad and found dead several hours later. He is survived by his wife
and week-old baby, the newspaper said.

The attack came three days after two Iraqi journalists working for ABC
News were ambushed and killed on their way home from work. The New
York-based Committee to Protect Journalists said 104 journalists not
including Khalil had been killed in Iraq since the 2003 U.S.-led
invasion. About 80 percent of those were Iraqis, it said.

A roadside bomb exploded near a group of Iraqi soldiers patrolling the
Sunni-dominated Adil neighborhood in western Baghdad, killing three and
injuring two others.

In Muqdadiya, about 60 miles north of Baghdad, two gunmen killed two
police officers as they walked by the police station.

Insurgents also fired mortar rounds into a bank in Baqouba while
customers were lined up to collect their pensions, killing two people,
police said.

Learn Chinese - Sun basks in Euro success

Sun basks in Euro success

(Shanghai Daily)
Updated: 2007-05-09 09:01

Sun Xiang is still in seventh heaven after his dream stint with Dutch
champion PSV Eindhoven despite the uncertainty over his long-term future.

"It felt a bit unreal parading the trophy around Eindhoven City on an
open coach with my teammates," the 25-year-old Chinese international told
Shanghai Daily. "I had seen something like this only on television
before," he added.

Sun returned to Shanghai on Sunday, seven days after Eindhoven clinched
the Dutch league crown on goal difference. Eindhoven routed Vitesse
Arnhem 5-1 in the season's final fixture to deny archrival Ajax Amsterdam
by a solitary goal on top of the standings.

PSV had earlier blown a comfortable 11-point lead amid injury woes that
saw Sun travel to the Netherlands on loan from Shanghai Shenhua.

The triumph means Sun becomes the first Chinese footballer to win a
league title in Europe.

"The past three months have been amazing," said Sun, referring to the
Champions League matches - another first for a Chinese.

"I found myself a different player after this experience."

Sun was released on a five-month loan deal in January but the Shenhua
player has expressed a desire to continue with the Dutch champions.

"I definitely want to stay on with PSV. I believe I can achieve even more
than what Lee Young-Pyo and Park Ji-Sung did for them," Sun said.

The South Koreans were the most prominent Asian players in PSV's service,
powering the team to Dutch titles and European successes between 2003 and
2005.

Ronald Koeman's decision to continue as PSV coach should also boost Sun's
chances of a permanent transfer.

While his future hangs in balance, his European foray has certainly
raised his brand status with advertisers making a beeline for him for
commercials. Sun has already drawn the attention of multinational
companies, including Britain's GP Batteries, who are keen to use his
image to market their products.

"I am excited by the offers not only because of the financial benefits,
but also by the impact they would have on people's perception of Chinese
soccer," said Sun.

Soccer has suffered in China over the last few years amid match-fixing
allegations and on-pitch violence that has kept fans away from domestic
fixtures.

"Chinese soccer has been through some rough rides of late and the image
of footballers is anything but positive. I hope I can change that."
